How Much Does House Cleaning Cost in Maryland?

There is no price list on this site, and this guide explains why. It also gives you something more useful than a range pulled from the air: the five things that decide a quote, the public wage figure that sets its floor, and the questions that make two quotes comparable.

The short answer

It Depends, and Here Is Exactly on What

A house cleaning cost in Maryland is built from the property, not looked up in a table. Two homes on the same street can differ by a wide margin, and the reasons are specific enough to list.

Size of the home

Square footage sets the starting point because it sets the time. More floor to vacuum and mop, more surfaces to wipe, more rooms to move equipment through. It is the factor everyone expects, and it is rarely the one that causes a surprise.

Number of bathrooms

Bathrooms take longer per square foot than any other room. Tile, grout, glass, fixtures and a toilet all need individual attention. A three-bedroom house with one bathroom and the same house with three are different jobs.

Condition on the day

This is the factor people underestimate. A home cleaned two weeks ago and a home that has gone a year without help can be identical on paper and hours apart in practice. It is why an honest quote asks when the place was last properly cleaned.

Which service you book

A standard cleaning maintains surfaces. A deep cleaning removes buildup. A move-out cleaning opens every cupboard in an empty house. Each is a different amount of work in the same building.

How often you book

A home cleaned every week needs less at each visit than one cleaned every month, so the price per visit on a recurring plan usually falls as the frequency rises.

The one public number

What Cleaners Earn in Maryland, According to the Government

Cleaning is labour. Before supplies, insurance or travel, most of what you pay for is people’s time, and there is official data on what that time costs.

The figure

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that in May 2023 Maryland had 14,340 people employed as maids and housekeeping cleaners, with a mean hourly wage of $15.94 and a median of $15.74. The annual mean wage was $33,150.

What it is, and is not

That is a wage, not a price. It is what a worker is paid, on average, across hotels, institutions and private homes. What a company charges also has to cover the rest of running a legitimate business, so the price of a visit will always sit above the wage of the people doing it.

Why it is still useful

Because it gives you a floor. A typical visit sends two people for a few hours. If a quote works out to less than those people could be paid for that time, something has been left out, and it is worth asking what.

What else a price carries

Insurance and a bond, background checks, products and equipment, time spent traveling between homes, and the administration of taking bookings and putting problems right. You are entitled to ask any company which of those its price includes.

Two ways to charge

Flat Rate or Hourly: Who Carries the Risk?

Paying by the hour

You pay for the time the cleaners spend. If the job runs long, the bill grows. It can look cheaper at the start, and it puts the uncertainty on you, since you only learn the total when the work is finished.

One figure, fixed in advance

You are given one figure for the whole visit before anyone arrives. If the job takes longer than expected, the company absorbs it. Quick Cleaning Services quotes this way for all eight services: the figure quoted is the figure charged.

The trade-off

A flat rate depends on an accurate description. The quote is only as good as what you tell the company about size, bathrooms and condition, which is why a proper estimate asks more questions than you might expect.

Four questions for any quote

Is this the total? What exactly is included? Who brings the supplies? What happens if I am not satisfied? If the answers are in writing, you can hold a company to them.

The line people miss

Where Sales Tax Does and Does Not Apply

At home in Maryland

The Comptroller of Maryland applies the state’s 6 percent sales and use tax to charges for cleaning commercial and industrial buildings, and defines such a building as one used for any purpose other than as a permanent private residence. Cleaning of the home you live in falls outside that definition.

At an office or shop

The same guidance puts janitorial services and floor, carpet, wall, window, ceiling and exterior cleaning of commercial buildings within the tax. If you are budgeting for office cleaning, allow for it.

If the address is in the District

The District works differently. Its Office of Tax and Revenue lists janitorial cleaning, window cleaning, and carpet and rug cleaning among taxable real property maintenance services. Anyone comparing a Maryland quote with a District one should check that both are stated the same way.

Short Answers on What You Will Pay

Because any number given without knowing the size, the bathroom count and the condition would be a guess, and a guess gets revised later. A few questions now produce a figure that does not change.

For the same home, yes, because it is more work. It covers baseboards, vents, grout and grease buildup that a standard visit leaves alone. Many clients book one deep clean and then move to a lower-priced recurring plan.

No. There is no mileage or travel charge anywhere in the service area. Distance affects which days are available, not the price.

No. Products and equipment come with the team and are part of the flat rate. If you prefer specific products, you can leave them out and they will be used.

Describe it on the estimate form: size, bathrooms, condition and the service you have in mind. A flat-rate quote usually comes back within one business day.

How to Compare Two Quotes Without Being Misled

Make sure the scope matches

A lower price for less work is not a lower price. Ask each company to say what the visit covers, room by room, and compare those lists before you compare the totals.

Put the terms on paper

The Federal Trade Commission advises asking for a written agreement even where the state does not require one, and asking a contractor for proof of insurance. That advice was written about home improvement work and applies just as well here.

Check the cover

An insured and bonded company with background-checked staff costs more to run than one without. If one quote is far below the others, find out whether it includes the same protections.

Ask about the guarantee

A promise to make it right is not a guarantee. A deadline and a remedy are. Ours is specific: report any area within 24 hours and it is cleaned again at no additional cost. The same factors set every quote we send, whether the address is in Frederick, Columbia, Rockville or Ellicott City. For an empty property, the move-out cleaning checklist lists what is priced in.
